OTR tire buying is different from normal truck tire buying. A wrong truck tire may create complaints. A wrong OTR tire can stop a loader, delay a quarry shift or increase haulage cost at the site.
This matters more as mining and infrastructure activity stays tied to energy, road building and critical mineral demand. The IEA’s 2025 critical minerals outlook estimates that mining capital expenditure could reach around USD 500 billion by 2040 in its stated policies scenario. More mining investment means more machines, more work hours and more pressure on OTR tire supply.
Start With Machine Type
The same OTR size can work under very different stress depending on the machine. A wheel loader, grader, articulated dump truck and rigid dump truck do not punish tires in the same way.

Read The Ground Before Choosing The Pattern
Rocky quarry floors, wet clay, loose gravel, hot haul roads and port yards all need different choices. A deep tread may help in cut conditions, but it can also hold heat if the haul distance and speed are too high. A smoother industrial pattern can wear well on a yard, but it may fail quickly on sharp stone.
This is why photos are valuable. A sidewall photo confirms size. A site photo tells the truth about the ground.
Understand E3, L3, E4 And L5 Direction
Many buyers ask for E3, L3, E4 or L5, but the code alone is not enough. A deeper tread is not automatically better. If the tire is used for longer haul cycles, heat becomes a major issue. If the site has sharp stone and slow machine speed, cut protection and tread depth become more important.
The buyer should describe the work cycle: machine type, average load, haul distance, speed, road maintenance and failure history. Without those details, even a correct size may be a poor match.
Price Is Only One Part Of OTR Cost
OTR tire buyers often compare unit price first. But the site manager feels the cost through downtime, repair, spare availability and lost machine hours. A cheaper tire that fails early can become more expensive than a stronger tire that keeps the machine working.
